In this article, we’ll explore a two-week itinerary for discovering the best of Ghana.
The first week of your trip will be spent in Accra and the Central Region, home to many of Ghana’s most famous historical sites and cultural experiences.
When you arrive in Accra, you’ll be greeted by the bustling energy of Ghana’s capital city. Spend your first day exploring the city’s vibrant markets and street food scene. Head to the Makola Market, one of the largest outdoor markets in West Africa, to shop for souvenirs and sample local foods like jollof rice, kebabs, and grilled fish.
On your second day in Accra, take a tour of the Jamestown neighbourhood to learn about Ghana’s colonial past. You’ll see the historic lighthouse and walk through the bustling streets, stopping to admire the street art and visit local shops and cafes.
Take a day trip to Cape Coast, a seaside town about two hours from Accra. Here, you’ll visit the Elmina and Cape Coast Castles, two of Ghana’s most famous historical sites. These castles were used as trading posts in the transatlantic slave trade, and visiting them is a powerful and emotional experience. You’ll learn about the history of the trade and see the cramped and inhumane conditions that slaves were kept in before being shipped to the Americas.
On your fourth day in Ghana, head to Kakum National Park to experience the country’s natural beauty. The park is home to lush rainforests, diverse wildlife, and the famous canopy walk. Walk across a series of suspension bridges high above the forest floor for a thrilling and unforgettable experience.
For the second week of your trip, you’ll travel north to explore the cultural and natural wonders of the Northern Region.
Arrive in Tamale, the largest city in Northern Ghana. Here, you’ll experience a different side of Ghanaian culture, with traditional music and dance performances, vibrant markets, and friendly locals. Take a walking tour of the city to get a feel for the local way of life.

The Larabanga Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in West Africa, dating back to the 15th century. It’s a stunning example of Sahelian architecture, with whitewashed walls and a distinctive minaret. Take a guided tour of the mosque and learn about its history and significance

You’ll visit local villages and markets, and have the opportunity to interact with locals and learn about their daily life.
The Kintampo Waterfalls are a series of cascading falls located in the Brong-Ahafo Region of Ghana. They are a popular tourist attraction and offer stunning views of the surrounding hills and forest. Take a hike through the hills and swim in the refreshing pools at the base of the falls.
