Gain professional skills, Learn to Teach English and Discover Laos

Program Overview

Travel to Luang Prabang, a fascinating mixed-heritage city in Laos where you will undertake an internship that allows you to gain professional skills whilst also assisting important education projects for children.

While on this internship you will receive a dedicated staff mentor and structured training to develop your teaching, leadership and teamwork skills to allow you to get very most out of the program.

After your first 12 weeks of training you will undertake a work placements for your final 12 weeks. Your work placement will be at schools or language centers where you’ll teach English and assist in managing teaching projects.  These work placements offer the opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience and form a lasting relationship with the community.

English skills are vital to children in Laos to improve their future opportunities at further education and a good future job. As an intern, you will become a critical part of the children’s development as well as a role model of the community and to other volunteers.

Qualifying candidates may be given the opportunity to work for selected partner organisations or with GVI in Laos, or in other countries around the world.

Life on the Program

Each day, Monday to Friday, you will walk along the ancient streets of Luang Prabang to school where you will lead a number of educational activities focused on conversational English.

As you progress in the internship, you should expect greater responsibility in overseeing lesson planning and helping staff manage volunteers and running the project as a whole.

Accommodation is in a centrally located guesthouse with private room and bathroom, with a provided food stipend for you to enjoy your favourite dishes.

Weekends will be yours to explore the fascinating surrounding area as you immerse yourself in the Lao culture and get to know your fellow volunteers.

Project Details

Coupled with the growth of tourism and English being the most popular subject in school, the demand to learn English by far outweighs the number of teachers available.

Working directly with the community, you will teach English in a variety of settings, plan lessons and help local teachers with the quality of their English delivery. Once comfortable with your own abilities, you are expected to lead the other volunteers, take classes and offer support during training sessions.

The main goal is to develop resources for Lao children so that they can improve their own English speaking skills. Your support is vital to keep this program operating while you impact on the children’s lives as well as receiving personal and professional development.

How this project makes a difference:

Laotian people that can speak English have better access to jobs working with foreigners and in tourism, an industry that is rapidly increasing in Laos. With English, many can change their socio-economic status and provide better opportunities for their families.
