Gain hands on teaching experience in the stunning Yasawa Islands
Program Overview
On this internship you will be based in the ancient Yasawa island chain, surrounded by pristine white-sand beaches, dramatic volcanic hillsides and crystal clear waters that provide a truly amazing environment in which to live and work.
Working mainly in the village of Nacula and also in surrounding communities depending on the requirements at the time, you will focus on providing educational activities and supporting classroom activities. You will be able to make a huge difference in what are the important early stages of the children’s development through your long term involvement.
The first 12 weeks will see you work alongside volunteers on our project in Fiji and will receive continuous training that includes theory lectures, group study, lesson planning and teaching practice. After the training phase you will start your work placement with a partner organisation or assist the GVI team in the operation and management of our project. With both options you will gain valuable experience throughout.
This internship offers the opportunity for you to gain additional qualifications and experience in a teaching environment, giving you a fantastic starting point for developing your own career.Qualifying candidates may be given the opportunity to work for selected partner organisations or with GVI in Fiji, or in other countries around the world.
GVI is real volunteering
Our projects are constantly evolving according to the needs on the ground at any given time. All the information displayed here will give you an overall feel for the project, but you should be prepared for any changes in the field when you travel. An evolving project means that we can constantly meet the needs and requirements of our partners, who dictate the work that we do. The way it should be.
Life on the Program
You will spend your mornings, Monday to Friday, in the community teaching and organising educational games and activities for the children. Days can be long as you will start very early for breakfast before travelling to the school by boat in time for morning assembly.
As an intern, you will be expected to lead by example as you prepare and plan for the following days classes each afternoon back on base.
Evenings and weekends are yours to explore the surrounding area, enjoy beach life, share drinks with your fellow volunteers or simply relax and take it all in.
Accommodation is simple dormitory style living, with chores around base such as cooking and cleaning shared on a rotational basis.
Your work placement side of the internship will continue along the same lines, but you will be expected to take on more responsibility, such as helping to train and mentor new volunteers.
Project Details
In addition to assisting in the classroom, delivering English, maths and art lessons, running sports activities, and participating in adult education training programs, Interns will also work towards an internationally recognised qualification in Team Leading.
Those enrolled in the internship will also help to manage volunteers and coordinate aspects of the wider project. The overall goal of this project is to provide much needed assistance to overworked local teachers in order to ensure the delivery of a higher standard of education to the children and community.
How this project makes a difference:
In recent years Fiji has suffered from a drop in tourism and sugar cane production, two of the country’s most important economic assets. GVI has been invited by the local government to assist local efforts to address education, health and water issues.
Working directly with the education aspect, this project provides the necessary assistance to local teachers to enable children to acquire English language skills in order to aim for a better future.
